About Last Known Copy

Who publishes this, what it refuses to publish, and why it sits at an address whose name it did not choose.

The name on this domain

This domain is named infopirate.org. The name was inherited with the address and is not a description of what is published here. Last Known Copy publishes nothing about piracy, warez, cracks, torrents or circumventing copy protection, and will not — not as history, not as commentary, not as a link.

That statement is first on this page because it is the question a reader arriving from a 2007 citation is entitled to have answered before anything else. The subject of this publication is information organisation: how people save, arrange and find things on the web, and what happens to those collections when the service holding them stops.

Independence

Every outbound link on this site is a citation to a third party. This site links to no other site its publisher operates, and never will. There is no advertising, no affiliate link, no sponsored placement, no paid inclusion in the Ledger, and no analytics that identifies a reader.

There is no paid tier, no newsletter upsell and no membership. Nothing on this site is behind a wall.

Who publishes it

Last Known Copy is written and published by Last Known Copy, an independent publisher — not a company, not a foundation and not a team. This is the only place on the site where the publisher is named.

Articles are unsigned, and that is deliberate. Every claim published here is documentary: it rests on an archived capture, a repository, a dated announcement or a public record, and none of it rests on the writer having used a product. A personal byline on documentary work invites a reader to weigh the writer instead of the citation. Where an action must be attributed, the publication is named as the actor: this publication could not verify that claim.

The publisher had no involvement with the previous site at this address, is not connected to anyone who ran it, and holds none of its data.

What was at this address before

From early 2007 the domain ran a social bookmarking community built on Drupal. Users submitted links with tags, notes and votes; the site also carried user blogs and a long stream of Windows Vista and Mac troubleshooting questions. Captures thin out after 2010, and by 2012 the site was already returning errors on its own paths.

Its open submission queue carried a good deal of spam, including adult-site promotion and file-locker link posts. That is recorded here as a fact about the address rather than passed over, because a publication whose subject is honest custody should not be selective about its own provenance.

The previous owner’s writing and its users’ bookmarks are not republished here, in whole or in part. The Internet Archive was used to establish what existed at which URL on which date. Everything on this site is written new from primary sources.

Why the old addresses still work

Several pages here are served at URLs the previous site used, exactly as it used them — including three that begin with an underscore. Citations from 2007 and 2008 still point at those addresses, and a reader who follows one deserves to land on something that explains rather than on an error or a homepage. Each such page carries a Provenance of this address note saying what stood there, when captures stop, and who still cites it.

Where no honest equivalent exists, the address returns a 404 rather than a redirect to something vaguer. Method explains the rule.

Use of machine assistance

Machine assistance is used in drafting and in checking this site. It is not used as a source. Every factual claim is traced to a named primary document listed in that page’s References, every status claim carries the date it was checked, and claims that could not be traced are published as unverified rather than smoothed over.

This site currently publishes no images at all — no illustrations, no screenshots, no diagrams. It is text and tables. If illustrations are added later they will be machine-generated and labelled as such directly beneath every one of them, and no generated image will ever depict a real document, screenshot or artefact or be presented as evidence.

Corrections

Corrections are appended to the article they concern, with their own date, and listed at Corrections. There is no distinction between a correction, a clarification and an editor’s note, and spelling is fixed silently. See Contact for how to report one and for why no address is published yet.
